Mr. Axototl, The Aztec's Friend, soon extinct? Was it Orson Well's that commented, "Gluttony is a public vice"? He should have known. Paul and I are living it here by the Lake for sure, for sure!
The spectacular salutary effects of Dr. Muldoon's Eating Elixir has me daydreaming about nibbles and tasties round the clock. Paul Edmund, my beloved responds. I am gorging with gusto yet maintaining my slim, fabulous figure. Fear not: Judy the Dirigible will never float into view again!
Here is a typical evening vignette here at Shangri-La by the Lake. Our guest is a local Yankee transplant dropping in to take a gander of the Local Color.

Wish you were here to break bread!
On a somewhat more serious note I have been studying a proper diet. I wonder why it is so hard to eat some of these really good things? When Jeff was here he prepared delicious, healthy meals for me three times a day but the second he was gone... I suppose you eat what you are accustomed to. I am inspired though to try and get it right. If I am so fortunate as to be given a reprieve from my cancer through this chemotherapy I should have the good sense to try and maintain my state of grace for as long as possible?
I recall one salad Jeff prepared I was especially fond of. Perhaps I will start with that. Goes something like this, I think:
a large fennel bulb
thinly slicedone heart of celery
juliennedhead of watercress (we did not have watercress so I used arugula)
1/2 small red onion thinly sliced
one orange....peal, cut slices with sharp knife. make zest from rind before peeling and use sprinkle over salad before serving
basil...a few shredded leaves will do
dressing: salt and pepper to taste (go light on the pepper though)
about 1/2 cup of canola oil and a bit of walnut oil
the juice left from peeling the orange
tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
.
I feel wonderful today. Me at my peppy best is back. My newly created joint pain is mostly gone and my energy spilling over. I'd better enjoy this for the few days I have before the IV Chemo from Hell enters my system again.
My recent stash of books are just great. I am reading Caleb Carr's, "The Alienist". A bit more sophisticated in style than my usual but marvelous in its recreation of late-Victorian Chicago and the practice of psychiatry then. I am especially looking forward to my read after that. A slim novel entitled "Lincoln's Dreams" by Connie Willis. Very metaphysical I am told but well written. I don't think Lincoln actually is in it except as a spiritual presence. Nonetheless he intrigues me as a person. So complex and darkly beautiful. Lincoln could not be appointed a dogcatcher these days.
Floating around in my mind is the fate of the Axolotl salamander of Aztec fame. Soon to go

extinct? I look around and wonder what we 6 plus billion humans have done? Looks bleak.

Judy,
I hate to say this but your husband's kitchen magic looks like something I would produce after an enema. From Paul's expression it must also smell the same.
I suggest you try dreaming of asparagus.
Given what you say about your two children you need as many of these dreams as you can possibly get! Or, adopt some new kids and cast the old out.
Barbara
"To dream of asparagus, signifies prosperous surroundings and obedience from children. To eat it, denotes uninterrupted success."
Dear Miz Flounce,
You just seem to draw in the whack jobs. Asparagus...NOT. Stick to Lincoln.
He is fascinating. Most folks do not know that he was an athiest The Devout today cannot tolerate this so they rework history. Lincoln even wrote a book espousing his hostility to Christianity but that has vanished in the mists of time. Probably a book burning to protect our delicate children from the truth?
Throughout Lincoln's life he had serious depressions. He may never have been entirely free of the contagion. Unlike most mere mortals he seemed to manage this well. Many believe the black dog even strengthened his moral fiber and deep sense of empathy. An excellent book on depression that might interest you (now that I see you are reading so much!) is Solomon's "The Noonday Demon".
Finally, reliable reports of the time have it that Lincoln was quite capable of responding to either sex. Can you imagine! I pant with distress even imagining suchlike. How 'bout you?
You are completely correct in asserting that this Devil's Spawn called Lincoln would be ridden out on a rail, tarred and feathered or worse where we live (I am a fellow Arkansan). I can hear your lady neighbors chanting to the point of hyperventilation for him in their prayer meetings.
Nonetheless, I feel a visceral gratitude that this wise and stalwart fellow was President during the Civil War and not a doppelganger of those serious Christian dunderheads, Sarah Palin or George Bush.
Lucas
Judy,
You are running entirely with the wrong crowd!
Lincoln prayed daily and was directly in touch with the Lord. I know since I just prayed about it myself and the Blessing of the Lord's Word came unto me.
RECALL Numbers 25:17 "Vex the Midianites, and smite them" also Zecharia 11:6 "The LORD declares, 'I will no longer have pity on those who live in the land. I am going to hand the people over to their neighbors and their king, who will crush the land. And I won't rescue any of them from their power."
And so it is.
Paula
Dear Judy,
I agreee with Paula. Do not listen to Lucas Loeb or Lincoln.
Jesus and the Bible are totally behind your prosperity. The Lord wants you to go out and "have gold pave your foyer".
Lincoln was OK but he did undermine democracy by getting rid of slavery and thus undermining the right of private property. In Bible times slavery was OK and it should be now. Lincoln was a Christian Republican but he did make mistakes which endangered freedom. It took FDR, Quakers, Unitarians and Democrats to create all of our current problems though.
And if Obama is elected gays will ruin the sanctity of life, the marriage penalty will return and more of the 250K plus I make a year will be siphoned off to poor folks, whatever! Jesus does not want that. Stop reading that trash you have scattered about and dig into the Good Book, girl!!
I recommend a good Bible Study Group for you to help you see that Sarah Palin is a wise Vessel of our Lord. I relate to Sarah because she and I are alot alike...caring, informed, wise yet humble and assured or our Path in Jesus!!

Judy...that salad is unbelievably good. Get everyone you know to make and eat it. I had a dinner party last night and I am now the talk of my town. You may not think that's saying much in Appleton but still it has never happened to me before. I'm a a Campbell's soup in the meatloaf sort of cook.
