My mother became ill in August 2008 with ovarian cancer. This is a story of the final months of an exceptional woman.

Judy and Snuggles: Thanksgiving 2008
Having a Spot O' Fun doing the Turkey Trot*

Coagulated Jello...the Pièce de résistance!**
.

Word of the DAY! confabulation***
.
Ol' Judy and her trusty hound dawg, Paul Edmund, went on the prowl Thanksgiving Day with Snuggles, our 60 pound gobbler, proudly leading the way in her lime green halter top.
.
Lordie...our festive Puritan Cavalcade landed us a meal for shure.
.
We three stood with expectant gaze on the doorstep of our frolicsome niece and nephew, Shelby and Pod. They gave us the double Hairy Eyeball stared at Snuggles and said, "Ya'll come on in now, ya hear!"

Snuggles disappeared in a cloud of feathers and ecstatic yelping amidst Pod's beagles out back.
.
Shelby wore Snuggles' halter top, classic black heels and fetching fuschia-pimento hot pants for a bit of Holiday Color. This ensemble showcased Shelby's Coagulated Jello to perfection! (see below)
.
Shades of Pocohontas!!!
.
My Lima Bean Dressing (yep...the Lima's and dressing all squished together in my purse) were accepted. In addition we had asparagus, sweet potato pudding, wonderful fresh, homemade rolls and coconut pie. Pod sliced into the 83 pound pork loin with the biggest, sharpest quadruple bladed electric knife ever made and tossed big shiny hunks onto each of our plates.
.
The wildly scissoring electrified knife and gobbets of pork stimulated my appetite. Boy was it all good! Paul and I scarfed up plate after plate of steamy hot home cookin'!!
.
Yes, we do depend on the kindness of strangers here 'bouts....friends and relatives too!

Full as a tick,

**Pièce de résistance is a French term (circa 1839), translated into English literally as "piece of resistance", referring to the best part or feature of something (as in a meal), a showpiece, or highlight. It can be thought of as the portion of a creation which defies (i.e. "resists") orthodox or common conventions and practices, thereby making the whole of the creation unique and special. The phrase gives the sense that the referred-to element is the defining essence of the whole, that part that makes it memorable or gives it its unique character.
.
***confabulation noun: A plausible but imagined memory that fills in gaps in what is remembered.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving !
(especially to the dears at the Genesis Center
and Teri at the Arlington Hotel!)

I am going in today to be jabbed with those secret sauces that thicken my blood. I actually enjoy going to the Genesis Center since the staff there are so very wonderful to me and the views are of green trees and rolling hills. Lovely people and lovely scenery. The last time I was there some of the ladies kindly suggested they would adopt me!

Folks, even those you do not know, can be surprisingly kind. Paul and I considered having our Thanksgiving meal prepared and delivered but then we discovered that no one in this area does that. Amazingly, Teri the concierge at the Arlington Hotel here in Hot Springs (www.arlingtonhotel.com) went out of her way to arrange, ad hoc, a home delivery for us if we wanted it.

Teri...you are an angel!! Sorry I am not up to eating much. Your kind spirit alone infusing the food would have made it scrumptious. I wish for you every good thing in this world. How's that for generous? You deserve it!

Well, these wonderful folks plus certainly all of you are making this one of my best Thanksgivings ever even minus that ugly old turkey. Who needs that bird anyway when I am surrounded by peacocks like you!

I learned that Dr. Muldoon, my oncologist, wants to add one more chemotherapy after the one I have next week. Instead of five total I will be having six.

I am tolerating the chemotherapy so well I think he believes why not go for the gold! Jeff says that getting more than eight probably is of no extra benefit.

Good Lord...I hope Dr. Muldoon doesn't keep going after my just added sixth treatment???! Seven? Eight?

SO...Paul and I will be here by the Lake and not in Louisiana this Christmas. Maybe after the New Year?

Filled with
Admiration
and Gratitude,

Judy (via jeff)

About Me

My photo
Vacherie, Louisiana, United States
Born in rural Arkansas my tongue took up residence in my cheek shortly thereafter. I use it to speak "Genteel Southern Lady". Cussin' I only use when provoked by the Uppity. Paul, my husband, and I have lived in Cajun Country for many years raising cane, twins (a boy and a girl; now adults? definitely old) and other mischief. Alligators, water moccassins and bears have tussled with me as I protect our swampy coastal farmstead. We are stuck now on lovely Lake Hamilton near Hot Springs where we have our second home. We have been here waiting for Godot since my heart valves blew out Late November 2007 and now with cancer diagnosed August 2008. The Furies have me in their sights... I am writing this blog to let my Beloveds know how I am doing so they will not "get off" in imagined ways on my dire straits. The reality is bad enough without turning my story into a B-grade movie of the mind. I know all of you wish me the very best. And I miss you! never no mind your fevered imaginations. This is as close as I can get to a fond and loving chat with you right now... Sadly, Judy aka Mizflounce passed away peacefully early on Sunday morning May 30th 2009 age 78.
