My mother became ill in August 2008 with ovarian cancer. This is a story of the final months of an exceptional woman.

Yoda Central aka Shangri-La by the Lake

.

Paul and I are now sitting looking deep into one another's eyes with nada going on around us. Yes, all the chirrens have vamoosed to their respective whatevers. Paul has been so wonderful during their visit. Butter would not have met in his mouth. I know if I could get him to stop talking about the stock market he would surely burst out in song and dance, just like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_moia-oVI . He is one Devoted Dude and I love him!

I had a delightful time and gained 3 or 4 pounds which I intend to hang on to even after having been blasted with another dollop of chemo today. The weight gain was probably due to Jeff's wonderful cooking (he has left a huge amount of the worlds best shredded roast that Paul and I cannot seem to stop gorging on) and had tasty soups, tapiocas, vegetables and on-and-on before that. It's not bad to have every surface of the house cleaned and organized either as he steps out the door.

Janet and the children were great fun. I especially enjoyed the times that Wolf (now 19) and Ariel (turned 17 on 3 Jan) would chat with me and take walks with me. They were very kind and solicitous. Why, we even sat down and had a few dinners together which they helped to prepare and clean up!!! Rumor had it you could not part the young of today from their electronic devices and junk food but this seems to prove otherwise.

Most gratifying. Janet was her usual funny and whimsical self. She has become so slender and elegant she can nearly fit into my "made for Twiggy" clothing. In personality she in increasingly turning into a Yoda.* But QueenJanita's Southern Charm and wiles in the kitchen bring Curly of the 3 Stooges more to mind.**

Paul's 79th birthday was on 2 January. We celebrated it on the 31st while Ariel, Janet and Wolf were still here. Ariel made a delicious orange cake for Paul and his friend Doak came over. We had a very merry, merry time of it. Paul even smiled when he blew out his candles. But it was his gift he liked best, I think. The kids gave him a finely crafted, high-quality sweatshirt with hood which Paul can hardly part with now. I wonder if he has ever looked at the back of it? Next I expect him to dive into "surfing the Net" as hipsters do these days to expand his already prodigious mind. What Wonders will the next 79 years bring to him?

Paul and I will be here enjoying our winter wonderland for the rest of January, at least. I get another blood booster shot in a week or so and a concluding CT scan at month's end. Dr. Muldoon will then make his pronouncements about any further treatments. I don't expect any but you never know.

I will keep you abreast. But for today I feel great!

Before I sign off I feel filled with the spirit of caring for those less fortunate than myselves and I intend to fly along the highways on my bicycle with my friend, Angelo (in my mind that is!). Even though the economy is in the tank I still urge you to give, even a small amount, so that I can help my friend raise the $3000 needed to bicycle the 575 miles to Los Angeles next May. Then I get to see the pictures and videos and make my daydreaming a reality!!

I am very intent on trying to hold on to my good health for a time. I know it is difficult to start new habits but I really must if I want to increase my chances of keeping this cancer at bay. So, I am going to try and get my 40 minutes of aerobic exercise a day and eat better. If you, too, are interested here are some great articles that might inspire you. The last one is particularly good since it has "doctor recommended" websites that have tons of medical information of the top drawer variety!

About Me

My photo
Vacherie, Louisiana, United States
Born in rural Arkansas my tongue took up residence in my cheek shortly thereafter. I use it to speak "Genteel Southern Lady". Cussin' I only use when provoked by the Uppity. Paul, my husband, and I have lived in Cajun Country for many years raising cane, twins (a boy and a girl; now adults? definitely old) and other mischief. Alligators, water moccassins and bears have tussled with me as I protect our swampy coastal farmstead. We are stuck now on lovely Lake Hamilton near Hot Springs where we have our second home. We have been here waiting for Godot since my heart valves blew out Late November 2007 and now with cancer diagnosed August 2008. The Furies have me in their sights... I am writing this blog to let my Beloveds know how I am doing so they will not "get off" in imagined ways on my dire straits. The reality is bad enough without turning my story into a B-grade movie of the mind. I know all of you wish me the very best. And I miss you! never no mind your fevered imaginations. This is as close as I can get to a fond and loving chat with you right now... Sadly, Judy aka Mizflounce passed away peacefully early on Sunday morning May 30th 2009 age 78.
